吗？concerning the tonal problem of the Chinese words which suggests a question

Hi guys!
I believe I might of taught something incorrect in one of my Chinese classes. After some research after the lesson and someone kind enough to point it out, I found out about the true pronunciation of 吗
吗（ma）neutral tone is the tone used in the sentence "你吃饭了吗？" and basically every other mandarin sentence with a 吗ma sound.
